Project - White's Crossing to Willow

Project Name: White's Crossing to Willow
Location: Parks Highway Mile Post 67-72, Willow, AK
Client: AK DOT/PF
Schedule: April 2003 to October 2004

The Project:
Large King Salmon now fin under the new bridge at Willow Creek, entirely unaware of the dedicated work Wilder provided in creating it. Resorts brimming with customers, eager to fish for the Kings take advantage of the new turn and passing lanes this project constructed. And visitors and locals, bicyclists and walkers, young and old all use the nature-imbued pedestrian undercrossing near the Willow Town Center. In this ambitious project, Wilder provided turn and passing lanes with pedestrian facilities on the Parks Highway. Wilder and its subcontractors removed and replaced the bridge over Willow Creek with a bulb tee girder bridge that provides three lanes and a pedestrian walkway. Wilder also provided landscaping, signs, striping and electrical services around the project. Underneath the new bridge, where the salmon slowly make their way home, an impressive rock-work staircase serves as a reminder of the work Wilder completed.

Challenges and Highlights:
During the first phase of this project, Wilder and its busy subcontractor needed to set the pilings for the temporary traffic bridge before July 15th 2003. This was the mandatory cut off date to be out of the water and avoid conflicts with spawning salmon. What started as a routine procedure, quickly developed into a race against the clock as Wilder and its subcontractor ran into unexpected rip-rap in Willow Creek. Crews worked 24 hours a day as excavators ripped the stone out of the river. Running literally up to the 11th hour, Wilder and company finished setting the pilings at 11:30 pm, July 14th.

One of the gratifying highlights to this job was the state commissioning a "rock artist" to work with Wilder and create the pedestrian staircase and undercrossing beneath the new bridge. Wilder maintained an excellent relationship with the both the state and the dedicated subcontractors throughout the length of this project.
