Project - Mobility Test Complex - Cold Region

Project Name: Mobility Test Complex - Cold Region Testing Center
Location: Richardson Highway, Fort Greeley, AK
Client: Cold Region Testing Center
Schedule: April 2004 to October 2005

The Project:
When the U.S. Army needed a track to test all their potential vehicles in the coldest conditions possible, they went to Wilder for the job. The cold region testing center tests brakes, handling and all components on vehicles with rubber tires the army is considering for purchase. With temperatures plunging to 70 below 0, the CRTC knew they needed top rate materials, construction and execution. Wilder stepped in and completed the job before the cold season hit.

Challenges and Highlights:
Time was the enemy with this project. Wilder began grubbing and clearing April 26 th . This stage was completed June 1 st , leaving Wilder precious little time to move the necessary 300,000 cubic yards of dirt necessary for the final phases to be completed before the season was lost. A dedicated Wilder crew did just that and in fact finished the project before the bitter weather hit by November 1st .

A successful, though unorthodox component to this project were the ongoing negotiations throughout the length of it. Unlike having a hard bid at the start, Wilder management successfully negotiated the deal as they were executing the project.

The CRTC was delighted with Wilder's performance, and began testing for U.S. Army vehicles last winter. In addition, they rent the facility out to major car manufacturers to test their vehicles under the same unforgiving weather conditions.
