Project - Lundeen Parkway Extension

Project Name: Lundeen Parkway Extension
Location: Washington SR 204 to SR 9
Client: Snohomish County
Schedule: April 2004 to October 2005

The Project:
Extending roadways and building bridges are standard practices for Wilder crews. The Lundeen Parkway Extension project offers distinctive challenges to our teams as well as the gratifying highlights of overcoming those challenges. The overall scope of the project includes: extending the existing road by almost a mile; widening state route 204 by adding soldier pile walls; skillfully handling wetland mitigation; improving the existing roadway; and constructing a 225' steel girder bridge at a site with steep slopes and difficult access.

Challenges and Highlights:
Steep, difficult access and other challenges led to substantial on-the-fly value engineering with the bridge and project as a whole. One such example came as a private developing firm inserted themselves into the project mid-stream. Wilder engineers and crews adjusted to the major job change and through precise value engineering, were actually able to reduce the cost of the project. This has been true for the project as a whole. Wilder has found the least expensive, most effective solution for on-the fly adjustments. In constructing the bridge, Wilder built walls to retain the cranes and equipment needed for placing steel girders out into space to form the bridge. Wilder also faced sensitive wetlands mitigation and scheduling issues due to a resident eagle nest, which limited work schedules in the area surrounding the nest site.

The highlights to this project have come in the form of challenges bested, an engineering feat accomplished in the construction of the bridge and in the mindful maneuvering around sensitive ecological sites. Wilder continues this project until October, 2005.
