Project - Evergreen Avenue Water and Street Improvements

Project Name: Evergreen Avenue Water and Street Improvements
Location: Palmer, AK
Client: City of Palmer
Schedule: August 11th 2003 to October 15th 2003
Awards:
AGC Excellence in civil construction under 3 million award

The Project:
The City of Palmer awarded Wilder with the contract to upgrade their existing water line in August of 2003 - precisely at the same time as the Alaska state fair - in Palmer. Wilder replaced the existing 6" steel water line with a 10" and 12" DIP water line along Evergreen Avenue, the main thoroughfare into town. With accustomed grace and skill, Wilder handled the throngs of fairgoers, store owners and citizens of Palmer who were impeded by the massive hole in the street. Wilder persisted, finishing the water lines, grading and paving, landscaping and striping required of the project, way ahead of schedule.

Challenges and Highlights:
This project was a little like juggling chainsaws. A lot of people needed to be kept happy with a colossal hole in their main route in and out of town. One of the largest challenges was keeping businesses open during the project. Another was handling state fair traffic that ramped up soon after the project began. Wilder also had to cross over a central fiber-optics bank 5 to 6 times during the installation of utilities. All of this had to be done tactfully while maintaining the integrity of the project. In the end, Wilder succeeded on all levels. Businesses were kept open, fairgoers made it to their rides, and no one got hurt. In fact, despite the juggling, Wilder completed the entire project that was slated for 2 phases over an entire year in just 6 weeks.
