MatCon® - a proprietary modified asphalt concrete that in its primary dense-graded form: has an hydraulic conductivity coefficient of <1.0 x 10-7 cm/sec; is suitable for contaminated material containment as a cap, cover, or liner construction material; and is manufactured and installed in accordance with Wilder Construction Company’s MatCon® Guide Specifications. MatCon is resilient, crack resistant, has superior flexural properties over wide temperature ranges, can support loads and heavy equipment traffic, and is resistant to degradation from UV and atmospheric oxidation, and chemical attack. A permeable (>1.0 x 10-4 cm/sec) open-graded secondary form of MatCon can be used for fluid drainage, leak detection, or vapor/gas conveyance.

MatCon® Binder - a proprietary formulation of MatCon modifiers and compatible high quality asphalt cement. MatCon Binder is hauled from the blending facility to a qualified HMAF where it is mixed with aggregate materials under rigid materials and manufacturing controls to produce MatCon HMA.

MatCon® Cold Joint - the location where a hot panel interfaces with a previously constructed panel that is now cold. MatCon cold joints are constructed using Wilder’s proprietary design and construction methods. When properly installed, MatCon cold joints provide uniform low permeability, resilience, and other desired properties across the entire MatCon job site surface area with no break in performance continuity.

MatCon® Hot Joint - the location where two hot panels interface and are made seamless by compactive “welding” as verified by visual inspection, and field density measurements that are correlated to hydraulic conductivity vs. air void curves.

MatCon® Hot-Mix Asphalt, or MatCon® HMA - a high temperature mixture of MatCon Binder, and tightly specified aggregate that, when blended at an approved MatCon HMAF in accordance Wilder’s MatCon Guide Specifications, can be installed with conventional asphalt paving and compaction equipment.

MatCon® Hot-Mix Asphalt Facility, or MatCon® HMAF - a conventional hot-mix asphalt facility that has the ability and is qualified to manufacture MatCon HMA in accordance with Wilder’s Guide Specifications under quality control measures more comprehensive and rigorous than various federal and state Departments of Transportation within a local proximity to the project job site.

MatCon® Job Mix Formula, or MatCon® JMF - the proportions of MatCon Binder, aggregates, and other additives used by HMAFs to blend and manufacture MatCon HMA. The MatCon JMF is a product of the mix-design program that follows JMF formats used for conventional hot-mix asphalt.

MatCon® Mix-Design - a two part laboratory program that: (a) evaluates the compatibility and quality of asphalt cement with MatCon Modifiers and formulates MatCon Binder; and (b) establishes the MatCon JMF for the project as supported with density vs. hydraulic conductivity curves and other parameters.

MatCon® Modifier(s) - Wilder’s proprietary additives that are blended with high quality asphalt cement to yield MatCon Binder.

MatCon® panel - a paved pass of compacted MatCon HMA installed using conventional paving and compaction equipment. A typical panel is a nominal 4 inches thick and 10 feet wide. The width will vary with the size of the paver, any screed modifications, and the geometry of the site. Panel length is a function of site configuration and job specific paving patterns.

MatCon® system, or MatCon® technology - A system to contain contaminated or hazardous materials including caps or covers and liners. The system includes a design using modified asphalt and aggregates, materials formulation, construction methods, panels, cold and hot joints, leak detection lysimeters, vapor/gas recovery or conveyance pathways, geosynthetic material interfaces, curbing and berms, bioswales, and/or other installations.
