Projects - SR166 Slide Repair

Project Name: SR166 Slide Repair
Location: Kitsap County, WA
Owner: WSDOT
Schedule: July 2004 to September 2004

Project Scope:
Three challenging slide sections needed repair along hwy 166 in Bremerton, Washington during the summer of 2004. With limited time for hauling material off site, Wilder was able to move 180,000 cubic yards of material; complete 8.5 acres of clearing and grubbing, install 50,000 tons worth of quarry spalls, excavate 6,500 linear feet of horizontal drains and install 3,000 linear feet of 6-12” drain pipe. Slide Section 1 involved flattening the slope to a 2.5:1 with horizontal drains. Sections 2 and 3 involved slope excavation, installation of horizontal drains and rebuilding a quarry spall buttress. All of this was accomplished while working around steep slopes and sensitive bald eagle fledglings.

Project Challenges:
The timing of this project brought several critical challenges with it. Due to the high demand for trucks during the peak of the construction season, Wilder worked tirelessly to meet their goal of moving 6000-8000 cubic yards of material per day. The estimated need was for 30 trucks daily, yet Wilder crews were consistently able to meet their goals with only 22-26 trucks per day. The contract allowed for 45 working days, starting July 1st, 2004. Consequently, a major part of the timing challenge was found in tight road restrictions, which were limited to July 16th through August 5th, and August 16th through September 3rd. Wilder’s crews completed the project on time while working 70 hour weeks without any injuries, therefore enabling SR166 Slide Repair Project to serve as a model of safety and dedication to getting the job done right.
