The purpose of this project was to stabilize and lower the cost of power to the residents of three communities located about 175 miles southwest of Anchorage by constructing a “run of the river” hydroelectric plant at the 110’ high falls on the Tazimina River.  Wilder requested a partnering agreement as a way to cut costs, maintain the schedule and construct the best possible project for the available funding.

With no access into the communities, Wilder was required to mobilize by aircraft and barges.  The majority of equipment and material traveled by barge, then was trucked overland to the community of Pile Bay.  At Pile Bay, a sectional barge was assembled to provide transport 35 miles across Lake Illiamna.

One of the first construction efforts undertaken was the building of 6.5 miles of access road into the project.  Local materials were utilized to construct the road following an alignment that avoided the crossing of creeks or wetlands in the sensitive wildlife area.  As the road was constructed, buried transmission lines were installed along the alignment for the power feed and communications to Illiamna.

This project was completed on time and in a safe and efficient manner, and with no lost time accidents.
