In 1997, Wilder was awarded a contract to complete the Lakemont Boulevard SE Extension project, located south of Interstate 90 near Cougar Mountain.

Spawned by the tremendous growth of upscale neighborhoods nestled on Cougar Mountain – and nearby access to I-90, the Lakemont Boulevard project had been envisioned as a convenient link to the freeway as early as the 1960s.  But environmental concerns, centered on the effect of runoff from the construction work into Lake Sammamish, had kept the project from advancing to the construction stage.

Before dirt was turned on the project, extensive initial coordination ensued among the City of Bellevue, King County, community leaders and Wilder Construction.  Cooperation between these agencies and Wilder on a project fraught with technical and cost challenges, as well as concerns voiced by the community, has been essential.  One challenge has been keeping erosion in check.  The new roadway runs over a creek in an environmentally sensitive area.  Native soils are very high in phosphorous, which is the main pollutant of concern in terms of water quality in Lake Sammamish.  The cooperative team targeted a phosphorous removal rate of 75% and that rate has been exceeded; some 95% of the phosphorous has been removed as a result of careful planning and execution.
