Ronald L. Terrel
TERREL RESEARCH.
LLC
Ronald Terrel has
focused his professional activities on innovative research and implementation
of construction materials and systems. Terrel Research is the outcome
of a career that was balanced among the complimentary activities of
research, teaching, and consulting. The Company provides research and
consulting services to clients and conducts research on its own proprietary
products.
Areas of interest
and expertise include asphalt, concrete, pavements, aggregates and other
construction materials as well as construction methods and equipment.
Included are the development and utilization of new materials testing
and evaluation equipment and procedures. Utilization of waste materials
in construction and environmental treatment of waste is an activity
receiving strong emphasis.
Dr. Terrel has been
an Emeritus Professor at the University of Washington (UW) since 1985.
Upon completing B.S. and M.S. degrees at Purdue University, he conducted
aggregate and concrete materials research projects at the U.S. Bureau
of Reclamation from 1960 to 1964. This was followed by two years of
project engineering and management for a major contractor on projects
in the U.S. and West Indies.
Upon completing
his Ph.D. at U.C. Berkeley in 1967, Dr. Terrel joined the faculty
at
the University of Washington in Seattle. During his 18-year UW affiliation,
he conducted and managed many research projects for public agencies
and
private organizations. These included utilization of waste products
such as rubber tires, glass, wood lignin, and sulfur, and their relation
to asphalt pavement performance. He was the first Director of the
Washington State Transportation Center (TRAC) and served as Head of
the Transportation, Construction, and Geometronics Division at UW.
From 1989 to 1994, he served on the Oregon State University faculty
as a research professor and was responsible for developing the Environmental
Conditioning System (ECS) as part of the Strategic Highway Research
Program (SHRP).
During his career,
Dr. Terrel has worked on extensive consulting assignments which
included
troubleshooting construction materials problems and a range of product
development concepts. Research projects have included the use of
waste in asphalt pavements, and mixture evaluation testing for
a variety of
additives and materials. He has on-going working relationships with
contractors and is very familiar with field operations, equipment,
testing
procedures, and specifications. For example, he was president of the
company that developed the drum mixer now used throughout the world
and is active in on-going development of hot in-place recycling of
asphalt pavements. He holds several patents covering areas of sulphur
concrete, laboratory testing equipment, and a system for storing
waste in landfills
based on polymer modified asphalt.
Ron Terrel has had
a lifelong interest and commitment to take good new technology from
research to implementation. He is active in national organizations
such as Transportation Research Board, National Academy of Sciences,
Board of Directors for the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists,
and Committee D4 of the American Society for Testing and Materials.
He has been active in numerous other professional associations, received
several awards, and has published more than 150 technical papers and
reports.
